Installing Windows Server
Install the new Windows Server operating system. To see if your Windows Server operating system is compatible, see the Supported OS Upgrade Combinations.
After you install the operating system, assign the new computer a static IP address on your LAN that is different from the old computer. Do not use the same computer name nor the same Internet Address as the original computer. This is required to avoid a clash between the two computers on the same network.
We recommend that you do not install any applications or anti-virus software yet. Wait until after you move AD.
Apply the Update or Service Pack and Patches
Go to Windows Update and apply the most recent Update or Service Pack from Microsoft (if any). A reboot will be required.
Finally, go to Windows Update and apply all important and critical security patches. Reboot if prompted.
