Adding the Server Roles
Add any required server roles that were present on the old DC that are required for AD or networking. The server roles typically include the following:
- Active Directory Domain Services
- DNS
Do not add any roles for Internet Information Services (IIS) until after you promote the new DC. Do not install any applications (such a Microsoft SQL Server) until after you promote the new DC. In general, do not install any roles or third party applications that depend on user logon names or user passwords until after you promote the new DC. This is because when you promote the new computer to be a domain controller, all local user accounts and passwords are deleted. This will affect any installed applications that depend on user accounts or passwords.
Add the AD and DNS Server Roles
Install the Active Directory Domain Services role. Active Directory uses DNS to locate the DCs on your network. If the old DC was a DNS server, you must also install DNS on the new DC. If you forget, U-Move will remind you to add DNS.
