Create a Dummy Domain
If you have not yet copied AD from the source computer you will need to first create a temporary dummy domain. Exchange will refuse to install unless it can see an Active Directory domain. (The dummy domain will be overwritten later when you run U-Move.)
Windows Server 2012-2022
Run Server Manager and install the Active Directory Domain Services role. Also install the DNS role.
After installing the AD DS and DNS roles, click on the flag icon (top) and select Promote this computer to a domain controller.
Select the option to create a new Domain controller for a new forest. For the name of the domain use a dummy name that is not used anywhere else on the network. For example use “Dummy.local”.
Click on Install to boot the new dummy domain.
Windows Server 2008 R2
Run DCPROMO.EXE. Select the option to create a new Domain controller for a new domain and a Domain in a new forest. For the name of the domain use a dummy name that is not used anywhere else on the network. For example use “Dummy.local”.
DCPROMO will prompt you to reboot to bring up the new dummy domain. Click Ok to reboot.
Next step: Install Exchange
